Extract Brewing – Quick beer to your tastes

Objectives

This unit will introduce more of the raw ingredients of beer: We’ll use malt extract, steeping grains, hops and brewer’s yeast to brew a beer.  We will review the additional equipment required to brew a beer with extract and steeping grains instead of a kit beer.  We will taste commercially available examples of the style we’ll be brewing.

By the end of this Unit, you will be able to:

  • Describe the ingredients used to make an extract batch of beer including extract, steeping grains, and hops
  • Interpret an extract homebrew recipe for use at home
  • Shop for equipment required to make an extract batch
  • Apply principles of cleaning and sanitation to extract equipment
