This course will provide you with hands on experience making beer and prepare you to make your own beer at home. Topics include:
- Discussion of beer styles, ingredients and the fermentation process
- Discussion about navigating the local homebrew shop
- Introduction to home brewing equipment and cleaning
- Hands-on demonstrations of making ‘kit’, ‘extract’ and ‘all-grain’ beer
- Hands-on demonstration of bottling beer
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Describe the process of fermentation of wort to beer
- Describe the ingredients of beer and their role in the final product
- Summarize and describe the attributes of beer style categories
- Compare and contrast ales and lagers and cite examples of each
- Describe less commercially common beer style categories
- Identify, choose and setup homebrew equipment for ‘kit’ brewing in your home
- Apply principles of cleaning and sanitation to your home brewery equipment
- Be able to ferment and bottle (and drink) your own ‘kit’ beer in your home
- Be able to ferment and bottle (and drink) your own apple cider in your home
- Apply fermentation strategies to make high quality beer in your home
- Summarize and plan extract and all-grain brewing processes in your home
